A diaphragm pump is a positive displacement pump that moves fluids by repeatedly flexing an internal rubber, thermoplastic, or Teflon membrane (diaphragm)
How It Works
  • Volume Change: A mechanical crank, a motor, or compressed air moves the diaphragm back and forth inside a sealed chamber. [1, 2]
  • Suction Cycle: When the diaphragm pulls back, the internal volume expands and creates a vacuum that pulls fluid in through an inlet check valve. [1, 2]
  • Discharge Cycle: When the diaphragm pushes forward, the volume shrinks and forces the fluid out through the discharge check valve. [1, 2]
  • Check Valves: Ball or flap valves open and close automatically to keep fluid moving in only one direction and prevent backflow.
Key Types
  • AODD (Air-Operated Double Diaphragm): Powered by compressed air instead of electricity; safe for hazardous or explosive environments (ATEX certified) and can run dry without damage. [1, 2, 3]
  • Electric/Mechanical Diaphragm Pumps: Driven by an electric motor or mechanical crank/lever for steady chemical dosing and general fluid transfer. [1, 2]
